Eliminating barriers in learning using the Realtime Database

Andrew Rowland, founder and CEO of Classkick, drew on his experience teaching high school math and robotics in Chicago to create a platform designed to increase student “aha” moments and strengthen teacher-student relationships. Classkick functions as a digital notebook where teachers can view student work in real time and provide support through chat, audio messages, or handwritten annotations, enabling substantially more feedback than traditional classroom methods. Built by a small team for use across platforms and by educators with varied technology experience, the app adopted Firebase to manage real-time collaboration, scalability, and shared iOS and web functionality without developing complex infrastructure in-house. As Classkick expanded to serve users in more than 180 countries and over half of U.S. schools, it used approaches such as sharding to accommodate increased traffic while maintaining live, collaborative interactions.
