Creating visual notifications with Firebase Cloud Messaging

Firebase Cloud Messaging expanded notification capabilities on iOS and Android by adding support for rich media images and introducing new Android-specific parameters for greater presentation and behavior control. Developers can add images through the Firebase console or HTTP v1 API using public URLs, with the SDK downloading and attaching the media when notifications arrive; Android requires no additional setup, while iOS 10 and later requires a Notification Service Extension using the Firebase Messaging ExtensionHelper API and can also support videos and GIFs. If media cannot be retrieved within available network or processing constraints, the notification is displayed without it. Android’s added parameters enable developers to customize timestamps, sounds, vibration patterns, LED lights, priority, lock-screen visibility, local-only delivery, persistence, and badge counts, helping notifications better reflect event timing, urgency, branding, privacy needs, and unread-item totals.
