Building resilience in tech (and in life)
Blog post from Firebase
At Firebase Summit, members of Humans of Underrepresented Genders, a trans-inclusive employee resource group, discussed practical ways people in technology can build resilience amid career setbacks, identity-related challenges, perfectionism, and competing priorities. Panelists emphasized reframing mistakes as opportunities for learning and self-compassion, illustrated by Rebecca He’s approach of treating failures as insight from her past self rather than proof of a fixed identity. Rachel Myers described recovering from the failure of her startup through small restorative activities, community support, and a gradual return to technical work, ultimately rediscovering both confidence and enjoyment. Kristen Richards addressed overcoming perfectionism by accepting challenging opportunities such as public speaking as chances to improve rather than tests of flawless performance, while Kara Yu discussed adapting expectations and ruthlessly prioritizing what matters as personal circumstances change. The discussion concluded that resilience involves clarifying personal values, remaining open to new paths and perspectives, seeking supportive communities, and prioritizing one’s own well-being when navigating workplaces that may not support diversity, equity, and inclusion.
