Building Firebase Quickdraw
Blog post from Firebase
Firebase Quickdraw, created as a collaborative hackathon project and featured at Google I/O, is an AI-powered drawing game inspired by Google QuickDraw and Pictionary. Players draw randomly assigned objects over six rounds while an AI model, unaware of the target, attempts to identify each drawing; scores depend on remaining time and contribute to a daily leaderboard. The web app used Firebase Hosting and its global CDN for fast delivery, a deployed TensorFlow model for image classification, Cloud Firestore for score storage, and Cloud Functions for APIs and daily score updates. During its launch, the team used Firebase Performance Monitoring’s real-time data to track page-load and recognition API response times, while Google Analytics for Firebase measured player engagement and demographics. The project demonstrated how Firebase’s integrated hosting, database, backend, monitoring, and analytics services can reduce development overhead and help teams focus on user experience.
