ID Verification (IDV) is a process used by governments and companies to confirm a user's identity by capturing a live image of their photo ID and a selfie for comparison, aiming to combat impersonation and fake identities. While effective, IDV faces challenges such as deepfake attacks, which have increased significantly, and issues related to cost, user friction, and document authenticity. IDV typically involves a five-step process: document capture, document assessment, data extraction, selfie capture, and face comparison, often incorporating additional techniques like liveness detection and NFC tag reading for enhanced security. However, IDV is not foolproof against account takeover attacks (ATOs), as it can be compromised by sophisticated AI technologies. To mitigate these risks, a multi-layered approach combining IDV with other security measures, such as device intelligence and monitoring for suspicious behavior, is recommended to enhance protection and provide a seamless user experience.
