AI token abuse: What it is and how to prevent it
Blog post from Fingerprint
AI token abuse involves exploiting the metered value of AI services, including usage tokens, credits, quotas, free trials, subscriptions, and API keys, through tactics such as fake-account farming, account takeovers, stolen payment cards, credential sharing, leaked keys, and resale of discounted access. The problem has grown as AI products make compute usage a valuable, easily resold commodity while inexpensive automation enables attackers to create accounts, bypass signup controls, and distribute activity at scale. Providers and affected users can face direct inference costs, unexpected bills, chargebacks, and revenue losses when valid accounts, keys, or cards are trusted without considering the device or behavior behind them. Recommended defenses include limiting spending and trial usage, securing and rotating scoped API keys, strengthening payment checks, assessing risk at signups and credit-purchase points, monitoring unusual account-to-device relationships, and using device intelligence alongside bot, proxy, and browser-tampering signals. A layered approach with targeted step-up verification for uncertain cases can help reduce abuse while minimizing friction for legitimate users.
