The 2 Types of Benefits APIs: Employer Connections vs Carrier Connections
Blog post from Finch
Benefits APIs are emerging to replace slow, error-prone file-based exchanges between employer HCM, payroll, benefits-administration, and insurance-carrier systems. The ecosystem has two complementary but distinct integration types: employer-side connections, which retrieve employee, earnings, enrollment, dependent, and plan data from HR, payroll, and benefits systems and may write payroll deductions back; and carrier-side connections, which exchange plan designs, rates, elections, coverage changes, billing, and confirmation data between benefits-administration platforms and carriers. Benefits-administration systems sit between employers, which know workforce and election information, and carriers, which manage active coverage, billing, and claims. Historically, employer connections have relied on customized SFTP or CSV feeds, while carrier connections largely use nightly EDI 834 batch files, creating delays, reconciliation challenges, and lengthy onboarding processes. Unified employer APIs and newer carrier APIs aim to provide more standardized, real-time data exchange, though they require different partnerships, data models, and technical capabilities and generally cannot be replaced by a single API. Finch positions itself as an employer-side provider, while Ideon and Noyo are cited as carrier-side examples.
