At the Washington Post, the individual manages and edits coverage related to mapping, natural disasters, and weather, having transitioned from a graphics reporter role since joining in 2017. Their journey into cartography began at the University of Oregon, where an initial interest in journalism shifted towards climatology and geography, ultimately leading to a double major in geography and Spanish. Although initially focused on weather and atmospheric sciences, a mandatory GIS class sparked a fascination with cartography, prompting a change of direction to pursue a Master's in cartography and GIS. The experience gained at the Infographics Lab during their studies provided valuable skills in mapping various scientific topics, which were further honed at National Geographic, preparing them for their current role.
