What Is an Embedded iPaaS? (And Why AI Is Changing It)
Blog post from Fastn
An embedded iPaaS enables software vendors to let customers connect their own business systems from within the vendor’s product, differing from traditional iPaaS tools that automate a company’s internal workflows. Its central challenge is managing distinct, per-tenant connections, including separate OAuth credentials, custom schemas, rate limits, failures, revoked access, and vendor API changes, making integration maintenance far more complex than simply building an initial connector. Costs grow with both the number of active customer connections and supported APIs, so teams should consider whether maintaining integrations is a lasting product responsibility rather than estimating effort by multiplying the cost of one integration. AI agents increase the need for strong governance, requiring tenant-scoped access, complete audit trails, and reliable tool and schema descriptions to prevent unauthorized or incorrect actions. Build-versus-buy decisions should therefore focus on real operational failure scenarios, customization needs, vendor maintenance responsibilities, auditability, and the long-term support cost of expanding connector coverage.
