Fastly's July 2025 survey of 791 developers highlights a significant difference in the adoption and perception of AI-generated code between senior and junior developers, with senior developers more likely to incorporate AI into their workflow and report time savings. Approximately 32% of senior developers claim that over half of their shipped code is AI-generated, compared to just 13% of junior developers, suggesting that experience influences trust and efficiency in using AI tools. Despite this, both groups frequently need to edit AI-generated code, which can offset the perceived time savings, although many developers still report improved speed and job satisfaction. The survey also reveals a growing awareness of the environmental impact of AI tools, with a higher proportion of experienced developers considering energy efficiency in their coding practices. While AI tools are seen as enhancing job satisfaction by reducing tedious tasks, they do not always translate to increased efficiency, as evidenced by a recent study showing longer task completion times when using AI. Overall, the survey underscores the complex dynamics of AI integration in software development, with both benefits and challenges in productivity and sustainability.
