Summary

Fastly DNS launched with secondary authoritative DNS to help organizations reduce dependence on a single DNS provider without requiring a migration or changes to existing record-management workflows. Customers retain their current primary DNS as the source of truth, while Fastly receives record updates through standard NOTIFY and AXFR or IXFR zone transfers and serves them read-only from its global network. Both providers appear in the domain’s NS records, allowing resolvers to distribute queries between them rather than treating one as a prioritized failover option, so the loss of one provider reduces capacity instead of making the domain unreachable. The service requires a customer-managed primary DNS provider that supports zone transfers and is intended to provide relatively simple, vendor-independent DNS redundancy along with authoritative responses from locations near users.
