Beyond Blocking: Creative Ways to Detect and Hamper Video Piracy
Blog post from Fastly
Restreaming piracy, in which unauthorized sites relay live content while monetizing it through advertising, has become increasingly sophisticated and commercially organized around high-value events such as the 2026 World Cup. Rather than relying solely on blocking detected pirate streams, the piece proposes selectively degrading suspected piracy traffic at the CDN edge to make viewing unreliable while making the intervention harder for operators to diagnose. Detection methods include URL tokenization, rate limiting, browser and bot fingerprinting, and real-time traffic anomaly analysis. Suggested countermeasures include throttling delivery to create severe buffering, silently substituting low-resolution “potato” video segments, and modifying HLS manifests to insert unrelated or misleading content such as prior matches, advertisements, or alternate audio. Randomly applying these disruptions across segments, devices, or regions can further delay detection and increase frustration for pirate viewers, potentially encouraging them to return to legitimate services.
