Time zone testing for agent-generated code
Blog post from Factory
Time zone testing helps uncover date and scheduling defects that can remain hidden when development and CI environments use UTC, particularly in agent-generated code that may alter conversions or scheduling logic without accounting for daylight-saving changes, ambiguous local times, or evolving regional rules. Effective testing distinguishes fixed instants from local civil-time schedules, retains named IANA time zones rather than fixed offsets, explicitly defines behavior for nonexistent and repeated times, uses injectable clocks, and records time zone database versions when reproducibility is important. Test suites should cover representative supported regions, transition boundaries, bidirectional conversions between local values and stored instants, serialization requirements, and updated time zone data to expose dependencies on outdated rules. Code reviews should document clock sources, storage formats, supported zones, ambiguity policies, data sources, and boundary tests, while automated end-to-end checks can complement deterministic lower-level assertions; coding agents should not independently select business policies based solely on date-library defaults.
