Test fixture maintenance with coding agents
Blog post from Factory
Test fixture maintenance can improve test-suite speed, clarity, and reliability by reducing unnecessary setup, shared mutable state, obsolete data, and external dependencies that cause slow or misleading failures. The recommended process begins by mapping each fixture’s consumers, scope, setup and teardown behavior, generated data, and dependencies, while measuring baseline runtime and confirming actual usage through focused test runs rather than static searches alone. Problems such as oversized, order-dependent, remote, or stale fixtures require distinct remedies, including splitting fixtures by tested behavior, preserving cleanup for resources such as transactions and containers, using shuffled or isolated test execution to reveal coupling, and making generated data reproducible through recorded random seeds. Coding agents can assist with dependency tracing and repetitive changes, supported by repository-specific instructions in files such as AGENTS.md, but changes should remain narrow and avoid combining fixture work with production refactoring. Validation should test direct consumers and the full shared suite, compare performance and test results against baselines, explicitly review snapshots and generated records, and document the fixtures changed, commands run, measurable effects, and any remaining shared state.
