SSRF testing for coding agent network changes
Blog post from Factory
SSRF testing for coding-agent changes should verify that features such as webhooks, URL previews, importers, image fetchers, and integration callbacks cannot be manipulated into accessing unintended network destinations. Effective testing traces untrusted input through parsing, normalization, DNS resolution, redirects, proxies, and the final socket connection, using allowlists and network policies rather than simple string checks or hostname denylists. Test suites should cover permitted destinations alongside loopback, private, link-local, multicast, reserved, IPv6, and alternate address formats, while validating every redirect hop and accounting for DNS rebinding and deployment-specific routing behavior. Coding agents should receive narrowly defined tasks, approved destination policies, relevant request entry points, existing tests, and commands to execute them, while security reviews based on STRIDE, OWASP, and supply-chain methods can supplement but not replace executable tests. Reliable evidence uses local deterministic servers, confirms blocked requests never reach prohibited listeners, assesses final connection targets, and logs redacted decisions without exposing sensitive internal details.
