Session cookie tests for coding agent changes
Blog post from Factory
Session cookie testing evaluates how web applications create, transmit, rotate, expire, and remove browser session state, especially after coding-agent changes to authentication middleware or host routing. Effective tests define an explicit cookie contract covering names, host and path scope, lifetime, and security attributes such as Secure and HttpOnly, while distinguishing authentication cookies from preference or anonymous identifiers. Testing should validate creation after sign-in, session-ID rotation after authentication and privilege changes, idle and absolute expiration, and complete invalidation on logout by replaying old tokens against protected endpoints. Evidence should come from real response headers and browser behavior rather than utility-level tests alone, with checks across redirects, errors, alternate hosts, and multiple browser contexts where applicable. The guidance also recommends isolated synthetic credentials, avoiding token exposure in logs or fixtures, pairing cookie checks with server-side authorization testing, and rerunning tests after framework, proxy, or identity-provider upgrades that may alter security defaults.
