Retry safety for agent-generated application code
Blog post from Factory
Retry safety in agent-generated application code requires more than adding retry loops, because overlapping retries across clients, proxies, queues, and job runners can overload dependencies, duplicate side effects, and exceed caller deadlines. Reliable changes begin by mapping the full request path, identifying the single layer responsible for retries, documenting timeouts and attempt limits, and classifying operations according to their side effects and idempotency requirements. Failure testing should use deterministic fakes or fault injection to simulate conditions such as connection failures, committed-but-unacknowledged requests, throttling, partial responses, and permanent errors while measuring attempts, elapsed time, final outcomes, and durable side effects. Effective retry policies use capped, jittered backoff, honor cancellation and total deadlines, and avoid retrying errors unlikely to change, such as authentication failures or malformed input. Changes should be reviewable through clear pull-request documentation, failure matrices, observability that avoids sensitive data, required fault-injection tests, and rollout metrics that assess not only visible error rates but also dependency traffic, duplicate work, and latency.
