Queue consumer safety in agent-generated code
Blog post from Factory
Queue consumer safety requires designs that account for at-least-once delivery, worker interruptions, delayed acknowledgments, and duplicate messages, as seemingly correct agent-generated code can otherwise cause repeated charges, notifications, or lost work. Consumers should define durable, retry-safe invariants, use stable message identifiers, and place idempotency controls near the side effect through transactional database operations or API idempotency keys, while detecting conflicting payloads for the same identifier. Testing should simulate duplicate delivery, crashes between writes and acknowledgments, worker restarts, transient and terminal failures, lease expiration, stale-worker commits, and partial batch failures. Code reviews should document queue semantics, acknowledgment timing, idempotency storage, retry and dead-letter policies, and failure-injection evidence, while keeping live replay and queue-purging decisions under operator control.
