Merge conflict resolution with coding agents
Blog post from Factory
Coding agents can accelerate Git merge-conflict resolution, but successful resolution requires preserving the intended behavior of both branches rather than merely removing conflict markers. Effective workflows pin the exact source and target commits, reproduce conflicts in a clean worktree, provide agents with relevant requirements and repository rules, and account for generated files, lockfiles, schemas, and API compatibility. Resolvers should examine both changes alongside their common ancestor, tests, and call sites, combine compatible behavior where appropriate, avoid unrelated edits, and escalate incompatible product decisions instead of making assumptions. Validation should include checking for remaining markers, reviewing staged changes, running targeted and broader tests, and documenting the conflicting commits, resolution rationale, affected files, and commands used so reviewers can assess the merged result confidently.
