Concurrency testing for coding agent changes
Blog post from Factory
Concurrency testing helps reviewers identify race conditions, deadlocks, stale reads, lost updates, and other scheduling-dependent defects that coding-agent changes may introduce despite passing ordinary tests. Effective testing begins by defining cross-worker invariants, identifying shared state and its protections, and using race detectors or sanitizers as an initial but workload-limited check. Tests should avoid timing-based assertions in favor of barriers, latches, fake clocks, and controlled execution orders that reproduce contested scenarios, while stress tests can expose starvation, contention, and resource leaks. Deadlock risks require separate bounded-completion tests and retained diagnostic output, since race detectors cannot prove deadlock freedom. Pull requests should document synchronization choices, exact verification commands, controlled schedules, stress-test settings, and practical regression tests, while avoiding weakened assertions or retries that conceal nondeterminism. When relevant environments or production conditions cannot be reproduced, teams should report those limitations clearly rather than overstate confidence in incomplete results.
