Build provenance for coding agent artifacts
Blog post from Factory
Build provenance provides authenticated metadata linking a released software artifact to its source materials, build instructions, and build platform, an especially important safeguard when coding agents can alter code, dependencies, and build configurations. The recommended approach is to have agents submit changes through pull requests while trusted CI builds the exact approved commit, generates attestations, and records immutable identifiers such as commit SHAs and container digests without exposing secrets. Before deployment or promotion, teams should verify that an attestation matches the artifact digest, expected repository and workflow, and approved commit, treating missing or mismatched provenance as a failure. Reproducible builds complement provenance by testing whether declared inputs can recreate an output, while provenance documents the specific build that occurred. Because agent-edited workflows can affect recorded inputs and signing identities, workflow changes should receive security-focused owner review, use pinned trusted actions, and be tested against valid and invalid artifacts, beginning with one enforced release-verification point before expanding coverage.
