Backup recovery tests for agent-generated services
Blog post from Factory
Backup recovery testing verifies that backups can be restored into a functioning service, addressing risks that schema, encryption, storage, or dependency changes may make apparently successful backups unusable. Effective tests define required data, configurations, keys, dependencies, restoration order, and approved recovery point and time objectives, then restore production-format backups into isolated empty environments without access to production. The process should validate integrity, migrations, supported older backup versions, encryption-key failure handling, representative data and permissions, rebuilt indexes, and basic application reads and reversible writes. Coding agents should receive bounded tasks, approved runbooks, synthetic data, and explicit restrictions against production access, while logs and evidence should document timings, versions, results, failures, and manual interventions without exposing secrets or customer data. Recovery exercises should be repeated after relevant system changes, since a successful backup job demonstrates backup creation rather than the ability to restore usable operations.
