API rate limit tests for agent-generated services
Blog post from Factory
API rate limit testing should verify that services enforce quotas fairly and reliably, particularly after coding-agent changes that may affect middleware ordering, identity handling, shared counters, or retry logic. Effective tests define the quota-owning identity, confirm isolation between tenants and authenticated versus anonymous users, and explicitly validate any privileged bypasses. They should exercise request thresholds around the configured limit, verify 429 responses and documented retry metadata such as both valid forms of the Retry-After header, and test clients’ bounded backoff behavior. Concurrent requests can reveal non-atomic counter updates, while failures in distributed counter backends should produce an intentional fail-open or fail-closed outcome. Coding agents benefit from executable acceptance criteria covering limits, windows, identities, concurrency, and reset conditions, and reviews should assess policies alongside tests for isolation and retry coverage. Failure evidence should capture identities, counter state, and response metadata without exposing sensitive data, while controlled contract tests should remain distinct from load tests that evaluate sustained system performance.
