Supporting iPhone Duo with Expo: a developer guide
Blog post from Expo
Expo SDK 58 adds day-one support for Apple’s foldable iPhone Duo and iOS 27.1, helping React Native apps adapt to the device’s compact outer screen, larger foldable inner display, changing orientations, hinge positions, and Split View. The guidance emphasizes progressive enhancement rather than separate designs: developers should use responsive layouts, preserve app state across poses, rely on Expo Router’s native Stack and NativeTabs so iOS can manage the new vertical navigation rail, and audit screens for expanded safe-area insets. Developers can further optimize unfolded layouts with split views, sidebars, ArrangementView, reserved-region APIs, hinge-angle detection, and optional rail controls, while custom JavaScript navigation is discouraged because it does not automatically match system behavior. Testing in Xcode 27.1’s Device Hub should cover folded, open, partially open, rotated, and split-screen states, ensuring that controls avoid rails and folds, layouts resize correctly, and state remains intact. SDK 58 also introduces an alpha App Intents library for integrating app actions and content with Siri, Shortcuts, Spotlight, and Apple Intelligence.
