Relaunching TeamReach: how OTA updates saved a 5,000,000-user cutover
Blog post from Expo
TeamReach president Gene Cornfield recounts how the company rebuilt its widely used sports communication and scheduling app after acquiring it in March 2026, inheriting separate aging iOS and Android codebases and an undocumented PHP/MariaDB backend whose long-lived data contained inconsistent formats. A four-person team rewrote the app in React Native with Expo and migrated the database to Postgres in roughly three months, prioritizing functional and visual parity for an audience of millions rather than introducing major redesigns. During a June 28 cutover, the team used Expo over-the-air updates to issue 12 JavaScript, styling, and asset fixes over three days without waiting for app-store approval, addressing production failures largely caused by legacy data that testing had not exposed. User feedback also led the team to reverse seemingly minor interface improvements, illustrating how familiar workflows can matter more than conventional usability assumptions for established users. The account estimates that update delivery cost about $4,000, compared with a potentially far more expensive traditional replatforming, while emphasizing that OTA updates cannot change native code, replace thorough QA, reach inactive users immediately, or eliminate the need for customer-support staffing and staged rollouts.
