Introducing expo-app-intents: Siri, Shortcuts, Spotlight, and Apple Intelligence for Expo apps
Blog post from Expo
expo-app-intents is an alpha Expo package that connects Apple’s App Intents framework with JavaScript, enabling iOS apps to expose actions through Siri and Shortcuts, provide searchable Spotlight content, support Apple schema domains, and associate visible app content with system intelligence features. It supports iOS 16.4 and later but requires development builds rather than Expo Go, while certain onscreen and open-draft features require newer Xcode and iOS versions. Because Apple extracts intent metadata from Swift at build time, developers define native Swift intent, entity, query, and shortcut types in an app-intents directory, while JavaScript supplies runtime data, handlers, and native catalogs; Swift declaration changes require a new native build, but handler and catalog updates do not. Templates demonstrate a basic counter action, restaurant ordering with dynamically published dish entities, and mail-draft actions using Apple’s mail schemas, including deletion, Spotlight indexing, and onscreen entity association. The package stores pending invocations until JavaScript is available, but developers must acknowledge and persistently deduplicate actions appropriately, as the queue retains only the newest 100 invocations.
