How to reduce app crashes — Articles
Blog post from Expo
Reducing app crashes requires distinguishing unhandled exceptions, native crashes, ANRs, memory-related terminations, and recoverable failures, since each demands different diagnostic data and fixes. Teams should make reports actionable by uploading build-specific source maps, dSYMs, and ProGuard mappings, recording both binary and over-the-air update versions, attaching privacy-safe context, and testing reporting in release builds while recognizing that some crashes may never be reported. Issues should be prioritized by affected users, sessions, blocked tasks, release cohorts, and device impact rather than raw event counts, then reproduced under matching device, data, upgrade, network, and memory conditions to create regression tests. Fixes should address root causes while preserving recovery paths, be distributed through the appropriate native-store or compatible OTA channel, and be evaluated using equivalent cohorts, denominators, observation windows, and crash-free metrics. Expo’s EAS Observe can capture JavaScript errors, render-boundary failures, selected native crashes, and release-level crash-free rates, while Sentry or Firebase Crashlytics remains useful for native symbolication; however, Observe does not currently capture ANRs or out-of-memory terminations and its error-recovery rollback capability should be treated only as a safety net.
