How to pick a mobile stack for an enterprise team — Articles
Blog post from Expo
Selecting an enterprise mobile stack requires evaluating more than framework features by translating security, identity, offline, device, distribution, and release needs into testable requirements, distinguishing mandatory capabilities from preferences, and assigning product and technical owners to validate them. Options such as Capacitor, Flutter, .NET MAUI, Kotlin Multiplatform, React Native, and fully native Swift and Kotlin differ in how much code they share and should be assessed against a real feature, particularly required native integrations, accessibility, maintenance, and platform-specific behavior rather than shared-code targets alone. Existing native applications can adopt React Native, Flutter, or Kotlin Multiplatform incrementally, but brownfield pilots should run inside the production host app to expose integration, startup, dependency, data migration, session, and release challenges. Framework selection should be paired with review of build, signing, access, approval, traceability, recovery, support, and vendor-exit processes, while teams must retain ownership of native operations, upgrades, SDK maintenance, and store requirements. A useful proof of concept includes approved identity systems, representative devices, offline failure scenarios, reproducible builds, installation over an existing app where relevant, and a follow-up change by another engineer. Long-term cost estimates should account for implementation, migration, native integrations, infrastructure, devices, maintenance, and dependency on external services. Expo is presented as a React Native framework and cloud-service option with hosted builds, credential management, workflows, brownfield approaches, role controls, SSO, and plan-dependent governance features, though its brownfield support has limitations and requires its own in-host-app evaluation; no framework alone ensures compliance, so app-level security testing and documented, periodically verified vendor facts remain necessary.
