What's Going on With the Air Quality in San Francisco?
Blog post from exe.dev
After noticing smoky air and elevated AQI readings in San Francisco, the author used PurpleAir, local air-quality data, news searches, and AI tools to investigate a possible nearby fire. A coding agent named Shelley was tasked with building a fire-watch website that aggregates fire-department information, air-quality sensors, weather conditions, and wind data into a map, while Claude helped assess reports of a controlled burn on Angel Island and develop a hypothesis that smoke may have formed a layer above the city’s marine air, affecting higher-elevation neighborhoods differently. The author supplied PurpleAir screenshots, implementation guidance, and an API key integration, then added animated wind visualization, completing the site in under an hour. The resulting Firewatch website is available at firewatch.exe.xyz, and the author directs others interested in creating similar projects to exe.dev.
