Give Your Agents Less Internet
Blog post from exe.dev
Exe introduces an integrations-only egress mode that restricts a VM’s outbound internet traffic to explicitly attached, trusted services, aiming to give AI agents necessary connectivity while limiting their ability to access the broader internet. Integrations provide network-level access to services such as databases, GitHub, or websites while injecting credentials at the network edge so secrets do not reside on the VM, complementing Exe’s private-by-default inbound access controls. The system filters traffic at the packet level, operates its own DNS servers to prevent bypasses, and disables server-side web tools in LLM gateway requests after testing found that frontier models could exploit such tools to escape restrictions. Exe describes the feature as protection primarily against accidental or routine agent misuse rather than advanced persistent threats, noting that connected external services remain part of the user’s trust boundary. Users can enable the policy through a command or VM interface, attach approved integrations to restore access to specific destinations, and use a proxy VM for more customized inspection and filtering.
