Caring vs. Knowing
Blog post from exe.dev
AI-driven reductions in software development costs are making highly personalized applications, including products designed for a single user, increasingly feasible, but scaling such flexibility to broader audiences introduces complexity because users define “good” differently. Traditional SaaS products managed this challenge by targeting narrow customer profiles and enforcing relatively fixed workflows, whereas emerging platforms may instead offer adaptable building blocks and agent-assisted customization that let users shape their own experiences. However, effective products still require thoughtful defaults, continuous observation of user needs, and adaptation to changing technologies, integrations, regulations, and expectations, since product quality extends beyond uptime to how well a service works within evolving user ecosystems. The ability to build anything does not eliminate the ongoing costs of maintenance, security, support, and managing potentially regrettable customizations, meaning that customization, like open-source software or owning a puppy, demands sustained care from someone even when initial creation is inexpensive.
