Exa is now powering search in Firefox

Exa announced that it now powers Firefox’s AI search features, including Smart Window on desktop and Quick Answers on iOS, providing live-web AI summaries with inline source citations rather than relying solely on language-model training data. Firefox uses Exa’s search API to retrieve, rank, and extract relevant information from its index of 1.4 trillion URLs and 100 billion documents, with different tuning for open-ended desktop queries and concise mobile responses. Mozilla can restrict results to selected domains, manage freshness for timely topics, and apply content-moderation filters, while Exa states that it retains none of Firefox’s query data. The partnership followed evaluations of multilingual performance, latency, safety, and privacy, reflecting both companies’ stated focus on transparency, trust, and user privacy.
