Dynamic Highlights
Blog post from Exa
Exa has introduced Dynamic Highlights, a research-preview search feature designed to reduce the context and cost burden of web-search agents by selecting relevant tokens across a set of URLs rather than extracting snippets from each page independently. The system combines retrieved documents into a unified input and uses a single forward pass to allocate more space to useful sources while omitting irrelevant or duplicative material, reportedly reducing returned token counts by an average of 95% compared with full-page content. In single-turn RAG evaluations, Exa reports a 40% token-efficiency improvement and a 3.8% quality increase relative to existing highlights at a 12,000-character budget, while agentic evaluations showed a 30% reduction in total token usage alongside a 2.1% average quality gain. Dynamic Highlights can be enabled in Exa’s API by setting the highlights dynamic option to true, though the company notes that the capability remains under active development.
