What is Single App Mode?
Blog post from Esper
Single App Mode is a feature for Apple devices that locks an iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV to a single application, which is particularly useful for organizations managing multiple devices and is activated through the Apple Configurator tool in supervised mode. It differs from Guided Access, which is more suitable for individual device owners to temporarily restrict iOS devices to one app, and can be disabled by users with the screen lock code. Single App Mode is more robust for large-scale deployment as it cannot be disabled by the user and automatically restarts the app after a reboot, unlike Guided Access. Additionally, it supports Apple TV, which Guided Access does not, and is ideal for kiosk mode use cases across Apple devices. Autonomous Single App Mode allows selective enabling by the user, requiring app-level support and an iOS MDM for configuration. While Android does not have a native equivalent to Apple's Single App Mode, its operating system can be configured to replicate the experience using third-party MDM solutions.
