What is Profile and Device Management for iOS?
Blog post from Esper
Profile and device management on iOS devices, such as iPhones and iPads, allows organizations to control settings, content, and security through a device management profile. These profiles act as a "blueprint," enabling IT departments in corporations, educational institutions, or government agencies to restrict access to certain websites, applications, and settings. Profiles can also allow remote access and control when paired with Mobile Device Management (MDM) solutions. There are two types of profiles: "supervised mode" profiles, which are non-removable and typically used for organizational devices, and removable profiles used in "BYOD" scenarios for secure access to corporate resources. While MDM is not strictly necessary to implement device management profiles, it is crucial for scalable management and monitoring of multiple devices. A device with a management profile indicates that it can be remotely configured by an organization and, depending on the type of profile, users may be able to remove it unless the device is institutionally owned and in supervised mode.
