The Android 14 Source Code is Now Available

Android 14 has been officially released after an eight-month preview period, with Google starting to upload the source code to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) on October 4, 2023. While Android OS is often associated with Google's proprietary apps bundled under GMS, AOSP's Apache 2.0 license allows developers to use, modify, and distribute the software without GMS, as highlighted by Esper's plans to rebase their Foundation for Android on this new version. This release marks the beginning of ongoing updates, with monthly security patches and quarterly platform releases (QPRs) that will introduce functional improvements until the transition to Android 15. The first public beta for Android 14 QPR1 is scheduled for December 2023, followed by QPR2 and QPR3 in March and June 2024, respectively.
