What is tool calling? AI integration explained simply
Blog post from ElevenLabs
Tool calling enables AI models to access external systems such as APIs, databases, software, and devices to retrieve current information, execute code, automate workflows, and complete actions beyond their training data. Rather than directly operating a tool, the model identifies when assistance is needed, selects an appropriate tool based on its schema, produces a structured request, and relies on an application layer to execute it and return results for a response or additional steps. This capability can reduce hallucinations, provide real-time data, support multi-step automation, and expand AI assistants from information providers into agents that can act across connected systems. Unlike retrieval-augmented generation, which mainly supplies static documents and knowledge-base context, tool calling typically accesses dynamic data and operational systems, though both approaches are often combined. Function calling is described as a narrower form of tool calling focused on predefined functions, while tool calling encompasses broader API, code, workflow, and device interactions. Reliability varies by model and workflow complexity, with benchmarks such as the Berkeley Function Calling Leaderboard evaluating accuracy, latency, cost, and multi-turn performance. ElevenAgents applies these capabilities to voice agents through webhooks, client and code tools, MCP servers, built-in system actions, and connectors for platforms including Zendesk, HubSpot, and Salesforce.
