Storytel Scales Personalized AI Audiobooks with ElevenLabs

Storytel, one of the largest audiobook streaming companies, partnered with ElevenLabs to develop the Voice Switcher feature, allowing listeners to choose between original human narrators and AI-generated voices. This initiative addresses a common issue where listeners abandon audiobooks due to dissatisfaction with narrators' voices. After years of exploring AI voice technology, Storytel found ElevenLabs' demo in 2023 to surpass previous evaluations, prompting collaboration to create AI voices suitable for the Nordic market. By late 2023, an improved model for Nordic languages was ready, leading to the launch of Voice Switcher in Sweden in early 2024, followed by rollouts in Denmark and Finland. The feature, supported by professional voice clones, is among the first to deliver high-quality, long-format AI audiobook narrations. Storytel is working towards fully automated, API-driven production to expand Voice Switcher across its entire catalog, reducing the need for manual editing.
