Senses Hub and ElevenLabs have partnered to address the issue of speech impairments and loss of voice affecting millions in Africa by developing personalized voice models that reflect local accents and cultural contexts, thereby restoring identity and social connection. Current Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices often use voices that sound foreign and disconnected, which can exacerbate feelings of stigma and alienation. The collaboration focuses on creating authentic and culturally relevant voices for AAC systems, starting in East Africa, enabling those with prior recordings to recreate their natural voices and offering adapted donor voices for those without. ElevenLabs' technology, which includes high-fidelity voice recreation and emotional accuracy, aims to integrate these voices into communication tools across various platforms, significantly enhancing day-to-day interactions in settings like schools and hospitals. This initiative seeks to replace generic synthetic speech with voices that empower users, fostering confidence and dignity, while promoting a more inclusive voice technology ecosystem in Africa.
