How to use a pronunciation dictionary for TTS models
Blog post from ElevenLabs
ElevenLabs’ guide explains how Eleven v4 improves text-to-speech pronunciation for abbreviations, technical terminology, names, and multilingual text while providing customization tools for words the model may still mispronounce. Users can create pronunciation dictionaries with alias rules that replace text with a phonetic equivalent or phoneme rules using IPA or CMU phonetic notation, and can apply inline IPA between forward slashes for one-time corrections. These controls are intended for brand names, acronyms, place names, and specialized vocabulary, with rules being case-sensitive and reusable across projects, agents, and API workflows. Dictionaries can be created in the Text to Speech app, uploaded as XML-based PLS files, or managed through the ElevenAPI, which supports up to three dictionaries per request. Although Eleven v4 does not support SSML phoneme, break, prosody, or emphasis tags, it offers alternatives including dictionary rules, inline IPA, Audio Tags, capitalization, ellipses, and line breaks; it also supports speech generation in more than 90 languages.
