How to add pauses in AI voiceover with Eleven v4
Blog post from ElevenLabs
Eleven v4 is an AI text-to-speech model designed to improve expressive voice delivery by giving users more reliable control over pacing and pauses. Unlike earlier ElevenLabs models that supported SSML break tags with fixed durations, v4 uses plain-language Audio Tags such as [pause] and [long pause], allowing the model to interpret timing according to the voice and scene context. Short pauses can separate ideas, add emphasis, or simulate a breath, while long pauses can create dramatic tension, scene transitions, or moments of silence. Punctuation also serves as a pacing tool, with ellipses, dashes, and short sentences influencing hesitation, rhythm, and emphasis. For long-form projects, the guidance recommends using pause conventions consistently throughout a script, while the v4 Enhance feature can automatically add Audio Tags. These controls are available both in ElevenCreative and through the ElevenAPI, supporting performance creation across more than 17,500 voices.
