Emotional text to speech: Directing AI voices with Eleven v4
Blog post from ElevenLabs
ElevenLabs presents Eleven v4 as an emotive text-to-speech model designed to turn written scripts into expressive audio performances using inline Audio Tags, punctuation, and contextual writing. Users can direct delivery with bracketed cues such as [furious], [sarcastic], [crying], or sound-effect descriptions, enabling changes in tone, pacing, emphasis, nonverbal sounds, and even emotion within a sentence. Examples demonstrate how the same dialogue can be interpreted as angry, excited, sarcastic, tearful, or worried, while a tagged horror scene adds effects such as creaking gates, footsteps, whispers, and laughter. The platform recommends iterating on tags rather than rewriting lines, generating longer passages for stronger contextual performances, and generally using one emotional direction per phrase to avoid conflicting instructions. Eleven v4 supports generations of up to 10,000 characters and is positioned for uses including advertising, storytelling, audiobooks, and multi-character audio scenes.
