Defending against AI-fueled social engineering

AI is making social-engineering attacks such as spear phishing, SMS phishing, and deepfake impersonation cheaper, faster, and more personalized, allowing attackers to operate at both large scale and high precision. The piece cites research suggesting that 86% of analyzed phishing attacks in 2026 were AI-driven and that people may be up to 40% more susceptible to social engineering by text or phone than by email. Because these attacks increasingly exploit identity and legitimate-looking internal context rather than malware, signature-based filters, rule-based systems, and static training programs may struggle to detect rapidly changing lures, domains, and payloads. It argues that organizations should shift toward behavior-based defenses that unify identity, endpoint, email, and cloud telemetry; use AI-assisted tools to correlate alerts into prioritized investigation narratives; and employ transparent, auditable AI models for security decisions.
