In an exploration of current challenges in platform engineering, Earthly's team interviewed over 100 engineering leaders and identified a common struggle with managing the diversity of tech stacks rather than issues with productivity or build speed. This diversity, fueled by the freedom of containers and microservices, results in a chaotic development environment where each team operates with unique setups, leading to difficulties in governance and standardization. While standardization is not feasible due to the necessity of innovation, companies employ varying strategies to manage this chaos, though none are entirely effective. Earthly is addressing these challenges with its new platform, Earthly Lunar, which offers monitoring for the software development lifecycle by providing real-time visibility and enforcing standards across development processes without disrupting existing CI/CD pipelines. This approach aims to maintain developer autonomy while ensuring compliance and improving the overall efficiency of engineering practices before production.
