Northwestern Mutual achieved a 70% productivity boost by using Dynatrace, but a blind spot remained in monitoring their GraphQL operations, which Dynatrace initially did not support. By integrating OpenTelemetry, which provides a standardized framework for gathering and analyzing telemetry data, Northwestern Mutual was able to gain full visibility into their GraphQL calls and address performance issues across their distributed environment. This integration enabled them to collect comprehensive data, although the volume was significantly large, and facilitated a unified observability strategy across different teams and platforms. While OpenTelemetry is highly customizable, it lacks a backend for data storage and analytics, making it essential for organizations to define their observability goals and configure OpenTelemetry accordingly. By combining OpenTelemetry with Dynatrace, Northwestern Mutual was able to adapt their monitoring and troubleshooting processes, streamline toolsets, and enhance their overall observability capabilities, while planning to further contribute to the OpenTelemetry open-source project.
