WebAssembly (Wasm) enables high-performance identity verification directly in web browsers by compiling languages such as C++, Rust, and OpenCV-based computer vision tools into sandboxed modules that run near native speed. For biometric tasks including face matching and liveness detection, local processing can reduce latency, keep images and video on a user’s device, and send only verification outcomes to servers, potentially improving privacy and limiting exposure of sensitive data. Although Wasm’s browser-enforced sandbox restricts access to system resources, effective security still depends on well-maintained browser engines, small and auditable codebases, regular security reviews, and Content Security Policies. Didit says it uses Wasm for its biometric capabilities to accelerate onboarding, reduce fraud and infrastructure costs, preserve user privacy, and simplify integration of browser-based identity verification into business workflows.
