Spain’s financial sandbox, supervised by the Treasury, CNMV, and anti-money-laundering authority SEPBLAC, tested Didit’s digital identity-verification technology for more than a year amid growing concerns that generative AI, deepfakes, and manipulated documents can defeat traditional video identification. Didit’s system combines NFC chip reading from identity documents, cryptographically signed data, active biometric liveness detection, and integrated fraud controls designed to detect face swaps and impersonation attempts while supporting ICAO-compatible documents from more than 150 countries. According to the company’s account of the sandbox report, regulators found that the approach reduced fraud to residual levels, provided security comparable to or greater than in-person checks, and aligned with European Banking Authority digital-onboarding guidelines. The report positions NFC verification and active biometrics as a more robust alternative to legacy video-based onboarding for banks, fintechs, and crypto companies, while Didit also claims its service is faster and less expensive than incumbent providers.
