OCR-based identity verification extracts printed data from document images and is widely used because it is fast, inexpensive, and supports many document types, but its accuracy depends on image quality and it remains vulnerable to altered documents, high-quality forgeries, and presentation attacks. Electronic ID verification uses NFC to read secure chips embedded in modern passports and ID cards, validating cryptographic signatures and cross-checking chip data against the document’s machine-readable zone to provide substantially stronger protection against manipulation. Although NFC-based verification requires compatible documents and readers, it offers higher assurance for high-risk uses such as sensitive financial transactions. A hybrid model can combine OCR’s broad coverage with NFC verification when available or when risk thresholds warrant additional checks, while platforms such as Didit offer automated NFC detection, configurable risk-based workflows, and liveness detection.
