Summary

IT-Wallet is Italy’s national digital wallet system, available through the government’s IO app and intended to evolve into compliance with the EU Digital Identity Wallet framework. Created in 2024, it allows eligible adults to add digital versions of their driving licence, health card, and European Disability Card after signing in with SPID or CIE, reaching 10.1 million recorded activations by 17 February 2026. Although the system is operational for citizens in certain public-use contexts, private companies had no published onboarding process, pricing, relying-party rules, or defined data-sharing attributes as of 5 October 2026. Businesses can currently use SPID and CIE at substantial or high assurance levels for remote anti-money-laundering onboarding under Italian law, while IT-Wallet’s own assurance level has not been published or notified under eIDAS. Future EUDI rules will require certain organizations using strong online authentication to accept EUDI Wallets from 24 December 2027, while EU standards outline likely presentation methods, selective disclosure, and a core identity-data set. Organizations are advised to retain alternatives such as NFC document checks, liveness detection, and face matching because IT-Wallet remains voluntary, excludes minors and many people without Italian documents, and may not provide all needed attributes such as address or portrait data.
