ID Austria is Austria’s state electronic identity system, which replaced Handy-Signatur in December 2023 and is notified under eIDAS at the High assurance level, although EU-wide recognition applies only to its fully verified form. Private companies can register through the ID Austria Service Provider Registration portal, integrate using OpenID Connect or SAML2, and receive user-approved attributes such as name, date of birth, and a non-reversible sector-specific identifier rather than the underlying base number; additional data, including age flags or identity-document details, may require full-function accounts and accreditation. The system had nearly 6.3 million registrations by September 2026 and 130 private service providers by March 2026. Austrian anti-money-laundering rules permit electronic identification for remote customers, with EU AML rules expected to apply from July 2027, while businesses are advised to maintain document-based alternatives for people without eligible ID Austria accounts. The material also notes eligibility and validity constraints, phishing risks involving renewal messages, and the lack of publicly stated private-provider fees, integration timelines, or test-environment details.
